Fuel and the Fire
The verified record of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, youngest Formula 1 world champion in history, and of his father Marco. Every quote on this page is verbatim, sourced, and dated. Where the record proved a story wrong, the correction is printed with its receipts.
The receipt · what was printed, and what was actually said
On the morning of 3 November 2026, a syndicated article about the new champion's tears circulated a sharp line about Ferrari, framed so readers would take it as his father's words:
"Thanks to his talent, the car and the fact that he isn't racing for Ferrari."
As framed by Yahoo Sports / Gameday Times, 3 Nov 2026.
Marco Antonelli did not say it. The line is the front-page commentary of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Monday edition, as reported in RaceFans' press roundup of 2 Nov 2026 and corroborated word for word by Crash.net with the same attribution to the newspaper. In the same days, Marco told LaPresse he had not read the newspapers. The champion's father never said it. His verified words follow.
The champion, in his own words
"It's good to win, but it doesn't feel as good because I think Lando today deserved to win."
"That's exactly what I don't want to do. I want to keep pushing race by race … keep delivering and keep enjoying all the way … and then we'll see where we end up at the end of the year."
Formula1.com, 13 Sep 2026.
"They help me to block out the noise, and that's also what's been allowing me to enjoy the weekend and perform. … I'm not going to lie, on Thursday there was a lot of talk about the championship and stuff, and I just tried not to worry about that at all and just tried to deliver the best result I could."
"They" are his team, his father, and his performance coach, named in the sentences before. US Grand Prix post-race press conference transcript, published 26 Oct 2026.
"It's always good to shut off some of the noise."
RaceFans, 3 Nov 2026.
"I lost probably two seconds because I was already crying, basically. I couldn't see clearly ahead. I could see two Ferraris, somehow, with the tears. So it was very special."
"Then on the last lap I just backed off because I just couldn't see the track. I was getting emotional, and I said, 'I'm just going to back off because otherwise I crash here.' So it was just good to bring it home."
RaceFans, 2 Nov 2026.
So clear, he almost could not contain it... but he did.
"In many ways it does help to add fuel to the fire, the fact that some people said that I wasn't belonging to Formula 1, or I wasn't ready for it. Which, at some point last year, probably looked like that. I wasn't ready for it. But I think last year, being able to experience those moments made me much more ready as well ahead of this year."
ESPN, world champion press conference, Mexico, 2 Nov 2026.
"I'll stay with number 12 because obviously it's a very special number for me, but also it's a way for me to stay grounded, to stay humble."
On keeping his number 12 instead of the champion's number 1. PA, via Glasgow Times, 2 Nov 2026.
The number is not new. He chose it in Formula 4 because of Senna, won his junior titles on it, and said the rest on title night:
"Also, to be honest, I'm very superstitious, and number one has never been a good number for me. Whenever I [used] it, it went extremely badly. So that's one more reason to stay with number 12."
RaceFans, 2 Nov 2026. The junior titles on the number: the Italian Formula 4 title in 2022 and both Formula Regional titles in 2023, per the same report.
The father, in his own words
Marco Antonelli is a former racing driver and a team owner. These are his verified words.
Ferrari passed. He tells it flat.
"Kimi was called up to Ferrari as a promising karting driver, spotted by Massimo Rivola. He was 11 years old, and even tried out the simulator in Maranello, the same one designed for the academy's students. Everything was ready. But Maurizio Arrivabene, who was then head of the racing department, said my child was still too young. A few months later, Mercedes contacted us, and the rest is history."
Formula Passion, published 24 Mar 2026, the week Italy was saying Ferrari should have secured him.
Race morning, title day. Ninth place was enough.
"What did I say to him this morning before the race? Full Attack."
Sky Sport Italia, 1 Nov 2026. Translated from Italian. His son then raced the restart taking more risks, in the son's own words.
The championship was won in the worst year.
"For me, we saw the Champion last year, in how he climbed back up the slope after a dark period, something that can happen to any driver; he wasn't the first and won't be the last. Last year he did a great job, and this is the result of the work done."
Sky Sport Italia, minutes after the Mexico title, 1 Nov 2026. Translated from Italian.
Nobody touches his money.
"The money is his, and we absolutely do not touch it. We don't even ask him to pay for our restaurant meals. As a father, I cannot accept the idea of my son paying for me, let alone imagine us touching his money. … Nobody touches his money."
LaPresse, 2 Nov 2026, volunteered by Marco against claims the parents spend the champion's money. Translated wire copy. He added that his son still gets an allowance.
"Step by step he makes himself stronger and stronger and stronger, and this is the result."

Antonelli has said on record that Ayrton Senna is his idol. His words:
"Growing up I would watch all the DVDs of the seasons from the 1980s to the 2000s, and in one of them, I remember watching Ayrton and it really stood out. … I watched the documentary and the recent series too. He is my idol because of who he was off the track as well as on it. An incredible driver, but a great person too. That inspired me, and to achieve even a little part of what he did in my career would be so cool."
Mercedes-AMG F1 team interview, 31 Jan 2025, from his first interview of his rookie year.
He has also said, in his own words, that he does not like the comparison:
"No, I haven't read about that and, to be fair, I don't really also like the comparison because I don't feel like I should be compared to someone who has made the history of the sport. I haven't done not even a single bit of what he's been able to achieve, so I don't feel like it's very fair. … And yes, he's my idol, he's someone I get inspired [by]. … And I feel like I'm still very far from his level."
ESPN, 11 Jun 2026, asked at Barcelona about the comparisons after his Monaco win.
Both halves stand on this page together, because a record that prints only the convenient half is not a record.
The correlation we print is about method, not destiny. Senna's Monaco 1988 qualifying lap remains the sport's reference point for a driver describing a state beyond conscious driving. Antonelli's whole title run, in the words quoted above, is a repeatable version of arriving clear: block out the noise, shut off the noise, enjoy the weekend, race by race. Senna's peak state frightened him and happened once. Antonelli's version is a discipline he describes running every race weekend. Where the two men diverge, we print the divergence: at Suzuka in 1988 Senna named his faith at the peak. Antonelli, in the verified record, names his family, his team, and the work.
He kept number 12, the number Senna raced with at Lotus and the number on the McLaren when Senna took his first title in 1988. Asked why he would not take the champion's number 1, he said: "I'll stay with number 12 because obviously it's a very special number for me, but also it's a way for me to stay grounded, to stay humble."
PA via Glasgow Times, 2 Nov 2026. The Lotus and 1988 number facts are from the Mercedes interview linked above.
The first champion on the number 12 since 1988 is a fact. What it means is the reader's.
The fact as stated by RaceFans, 2 Nov 2026, and by Reuters (Alan Baldwin), 1 Nov 2026. It was also put to Antonelli directly at the champion's press conference, in the FIA transcript.
